During the internship, I was actively involved in nearly every project and took on a wide variety of tasks. The public sector often moves at a slower pace, with many projects pausing for weeks due to various factors. To stay productive, we worked on multiple projects simultaneously. I handled a broad range of design responsibilities, which required me to learn quickly, adapt, and remain flexible in a dynamic environment.
During my time at Dublin City Council, I had the opportunity to develop my graphic design skills by working with various teams on a range of projects. I was tasked with creating designs that not only aligned with the council's brand but also reflected the values of Dublin City and the Dublin City BETA program. This involved adhering to established brand guidelines while ensuring the designs conveyed the right message and tone. I did this across multiple platforms such as Adobe in Design, Miro and Figma.
During an E-Cargo bike trial, we aimed to boost weekly usage, and one barrier we identified was that many people didn’t know what the Bike Bunker was or whether it was open to the public. To address this, I was tasked with creating temporary signage to test if it could help clarify the purpose of the Bunker. The sign needed to be placed on top of the Bunker, clearly visible but not too intrusive, as it was located in a residential area.
One of the projects we started while I was at DCC was the implementation of smart locks in Herbert Park to improve traceability and reduce the workload for park staff. This would involve users being sent keys to their phones rather than having a physical key to facilities. For this trial to be successful participants would need to learn a completely new system. For it to be as seamless as possible we would need to create clear and concise instructions to accompany the lock.
